Obituary of Donald David Caligiuri

It is with regret that we announce Donald David Caligiuri (Uncle Donnie, UD, or Bu), Age 66, of Great Falls, VA, passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2017. 

Don was born on April 28, 1951 in South Carolina; he was the son of the late Donald Caligiuri and Nell Johnston.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Roy Johnston and stepbrother, David Johnston.

Donald grew up in Clairton PA and excelled in music at a very early age following in his father’s footsteps.  Donald mastered the trumpet at such an early age that in his early teens, he was selected to play professionally for all of the biggest acts such as Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and many others at the famous Twin Coaches and other Pittsburgh area venues.  He received his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Pittsburgh in 1973 and then took to the road as a professional musician with his band Sunship.  After a few years, Don hung up the trumpet for good and ended his professional musician career to get “a real job.”  He recently retired from a successful career in Financial Services, and in recent years, had gotten back to his musical roots by teaching himself the piano. Don was so incredibly musically gifted that he was able to listen to a few bars of a song that he had never heard before, and then craft an entire musical arrangement within minutes.  His playing, talent and vivacious personality brought such joy to all.

He is survived by wife, Deborah Fiore, mother, Nell Johnston, sister, Cynthia Wichman, father-in-law, C. John Fiore, mother-in-law, Bess Fiore, brother-in-law, John T. (Diana) Fiore, stepbrother, John (Angie) Johnston, stepbrother, Roy (Doris) Johnston, step sister-in-law, Marylou (David) Johnston. Nieces/Nephews: Danielle (Jake, Dylan, Vincent) Osman, Giana Fiore, Bianca Fiore, Nina Fiore, Evan Fiore, Jeffrey Wichman, Christen Johnston, Matthew Johnston, Ashley Johnston, and Davrien Johnston

In loving memory of Donald, the family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM on Friday, May 5, 2017 at Adams Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden Street, Herndon, VA 20170.  Please join us immediately following for a memorial service beginning at 3:00 PM on Friday, May 5, 2017.
