It's been 5 years since my Uncle John passed. He was an important person in my life, and in the lives of others in my family including his daughter, Sonya, who I used to spend summers with as a kid at his home in Waukee, Iowa -- and his grand-daughter Alicia, who I adore. At one point during a deep conversation, John asked me to be there for Alicia, and I have been honored to keep that promise. I was already committed to mentoring and supporting Alicia before he asked. I love her dearly so this was not a difficult assignment.
John was a mix of humor and strength and wisdom. If you didn't know him, you might have thought he was a tough guy. He could be, but he was always drawing on a well of kindness and empathy for others. He was a protector, and a hero to so many. For me, he was a role model and a source of validation and support, as well as kindness and humor.
I'm sharing one of John's famous holiday cards, penned by him. A John Nagla original. Miss you, Uncle John.

It's been a few years since my father passed and I miss him dearly. My dad was my sun. I hadn't been informed that he was sick or that he was in intensive care. It is due to my daughter Alicia that I was able to speak to him before he died. Otherwise I'd never have known. I remember my father telling me when his mother passed, she called all the children into her room and told them all she was going with "the angels". I heard this story repeatedly growing up. When we are able to facilitate a call to my father, the family was able to tell him goodbye. I believe this was so important for him - he left us at peace.
My father and I were estranged the last few years of his life. Thankfully we were able to make peace toward the end. At the end I was able to tell him that he was an amazing dad and that I was so very proud to be his daughter. So many memories of my dad - his Toyota trucks, overalls and ripped polos. Him surrounded by books and working on his crossword puzzles. Watching Wimbledon and of course.... golf. I'd give anything to watch some golf with my dad. Perhaps in the next life.
I miss you Tevs and love you so very much. Thank you for being my dad.

John was a great guy. I first met him just after he started at the Post Office and later worked with him on several projects. He had a great sense of humor and a great sense of adventure. I'll miss him.

Carrie and family - I am devastated as I am sure you are as well. I cannot imagine a world without John. Like a brother to me for three decades, his passing reached me like a ton of bricks. God like I always thought he was bullet proof and would bury us all. Little did I know he would be gone so soon. God speed, God bless, and may God have mercy on those here that carry on without him. I will carry him forward with my memories, my stories and the photos of us having good times, and they were all good times.

Saddened to hear about John's passing away! He and I worked together at the Post Office in Des Moines Iowa when he was in charge of Merchandising and Promotions. We both enjoyed weight lifting, music and crosswords! I went to work for the Postal Inspection Service and I heard he was assigned in Washington DC. I am sorry for your lost. He was a very personable and had a good sense of humor. I know you must have been very proud of him and his accomplishments. He was truly a good guy! Rest in peace, John! My condolences to the family.

My deepest condolences to the Nagla Family.
I''m not sure when or how John and I became Facebook friends. I'm sure it is because we thought alike on the political issues our country have been facing now and for the past few years.
I've enjoyed his political cartoons and his shares of his family and friends. Though I did not know him personally, I know he was a wonderful family man and friend to those who enjoyed him as a part of their lives.
Rest in Heaven my friend. You will be missed.

John and I began our postal careers together. In the early stages of our careers, we had some very good times playing basketball, tennis and golf together. In the mid 1990's we both moved on to different management positions in different locations. We didn't see each other often but always kept in touch. I will miss knowing he's within a phone call or a text away or even a like on one of his anticipated posts. John was a great guy and a very good friend. He will be missed by everyone that came in contact with him.

I have many memories of John as a young man in Des Moines. His good natured way and his laughter and joy of life were such a basic part of him. He loved Sonya dearly as well all as of his grand children. He was a very special man and I was honored to know him. My heart goes out to each member of his family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
