Obituary of Duncan David Briggs

Duncan D. Briggs

 

Col. Duncan D. Briggs passed away at his residence in Oak Hill, VA, on Aug. 18, 2017. He was born on Dec. 5, 1938, in Meridian, MS and later moved to Darien, CT and then to Atlanta, GA, where he graduated from Northside High School in 1956 and Vanderbilt University in 1960 with a BA degree in Philosophy before starting his career in the Army. He was stationed in Korea, Viet Nam, Germany, Governors Island, NY, and the Pentagon as an intelligence officer. While in the military, he was an aid to Gen. Odom and a White House social aid under Presidents Nixon and Ford. While in the army he obtained a MBA degree at the University of Georgia. After retiring from the military with a rank of  Colonel in 1986, he worked with The Wollongong Group before retiring from civilian work.

 

Duncan was fluent in French, German and Korean and in retirement, traveled often to Europe. He was an avid reader and spent much of his time playing his guitar as well as his mandolin and banjo, frequently attending old time music camps in Virginia and surrounding states.

 

He is predeceased by his father, Duncan D. Briggs and mother, Mabel R. Briggs and is survived by three brothers, Frank L.R. Briggs (Mary Jo), W. Spurgeon Briggs(Tanya), and Charles R. Briggs (Jerry). He had six nephews and nieces and seven grand nephews and nieces.

 

A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 3 PM at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, December 28, 2017.  Friends and family need to gather at the Administration building of the cemetery at 2:30 PM.
