Obituary of Timothy Blaine Lyberger

Timothy Blaine Lyberger, 57, of Aldie, VA, passed peacefully at home on Thursday, November 2, 2017 after an eight year battle with cancer.

Tim was born August 6, 1960 in Falls Church, VA.  He spent his life in Northern Virginia and was a shot put record holder of 48’ 8” at George Mason High School for 21 years until Beau Fay finally beat it (49’1.75”), with Tim’s complete support, in 2001.  He is the son of Doris and Bill Lyberger, brother to Russ Lybrger and Ardith Blair who all preceded him in death.  He was married to Sally Anne Lyberger since 1997 and through her he has two step daughters, Kelly Dixon and Dawn Jewell. Tim was an amazing grandfather to Riley, Dylan and Camryn and his great-granddaughter, Keegen Marie.  He has many nieces, nephews and cousins living throughout Northern Virginia.

Tim completed his Associates Degree at Northern Virginia Community College in Recreation and Parks Management…his dream at the time was to be a Park Ranger.  He spent twenty years working in grounds keeping and left as the Assistant Superintendent for the Fairfax County Park Authority.  But his nine years spent as a volunteer youth leader for Galilee United Methodist Church showed him a much different path.  He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Youth Ministry from Regent University in 2014 and went on to complete his Master of Arts in Youth, Family, and Children’s Ministry from Indiana Wesleyan University Seminary in 2016.

Tim loved football and played for his high school and even semi-pro football for the Virginia Chargers and then eight years playing for the NOVAs Adult Flag Football League and went on to pass on his love of the sport to young athletes  as a coach for eight years for the Ashburn Youth Football League.  As much as he loved football, he was always willing to learn other sports when his youth ran cross country and his grand-son played lacrosse!

Tim spent the last eleven years as the Director of Youth Ministry at Pender United Methodist Church.  So many of his youth have gone on to graduate from schools across the country, become husbands and wives and even parents.  He touched each youth he ever met and as we’ve talked to them over the last week they shared that Tim had a way of making each one feel like they were his favorite.

A viewing and receiving of friends and family will be held at Pender United Methodist Church, 12401 Alder Woods Drive, Fairfax, VA from 5:30-8:00 pm on Sunday evening. On Monday, November 6th there will be a celebration of his life beginning with a service at 11am followed by a reception at the church.  Burial will be at 3:00pm at National Memorial Park, 7482 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, VA.

All are invited to attend and the family would like attendees to know that dark somber colors are out for this time of sharing together.  Comfortable clothes, Redskins jerseys, anything that makes you remember the totally atypical person Tim was, is completely acceptable.

Donations can be made to the Pender United Methodist Church Building in Faith for the Future campaign or to UMCOR in Tim’s memory.  Flowers can be delivered to Pender for use at the Sunday evening visitation and for the service on Monday.
