Obituary of Brian Scott Buckman

On Friday, December 1, 2017, Brian Scott Buckman , age 59, lost his courageous battle with cancer. Scott, the name for which he was best known, passed away peacefully at home with family nearby.  He was a long-time resident of Loudoun County, currently residing in Ashburn, Virginia.  Born May 5, 1958, on a U.S. Naval Base in Japan, Scott grew up in Sterling Park, VA and graduated from Broad Run High School in 1976 and from Randolph Macon College in 1980. He leaves his loving wife of 29 years, Lora (Bleutge) Buckman, and his beloved daughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Buckman. He is also survived by his father Robert Buckman Sr. of Spotsylvania, VA. His mother, Dorothy Williams Buckman predeceased him in 2013.  Scott was one of a large family of Buckmans. His brothers Paul (Holly) Buckman of Halifax, VA; Steve Buckman of Elizabeth City, NC; Robert (Mary) Buckman Jr. of Ashburn; and John (Kerry) Buckman of Berryville, VA all survive him. A brother, Michael Buckman predeceased him. Sisters surviving are Cathy Buckman of Maryland;  Diane Welsch of Chantilly, VA; Cindy Buckman of Palm Coast, Florida, and Sheila Buckman Reilly of Chesapeake, Va.  A brother–in-law, Stephen Bleutge, predeceased him while another brother-in –law, Michael Bleutge of Ashburn survives him. Scott is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.    

Scott was employed as a Project Manager by Hughes Network Systems in Germantown, Maryland for 29 years.

An avid sports fan, both as a participant and observer, Scott played football in both high school and college. He was well-known in Loudoun County for his work with the Lower Loudoun Boys’ Football League as a coach, announcer at games, and member of the Board.  He also played on several softball teams including the Bucs, Christ the Redeemer, St. Theresa, Knights of Columbus, and Ashburn Pub softball teams. He served as the Softball Tournament Director for the National Knights of Columbus Softball, and received a Player of the Week Award. When his daughter, Kathryn “Katie.” followed  his footsteps into the sports world, he was delighted to support her by keeping score at both her basketball and lacrosse games at Broad Run High School. Even after he was diagnosed with cancer, he could be found attending her lacrosse games at Meredith College in North Carolina and cheering on her Avenging Angels team as her Number 1 fan.  Scott also enjoyed playing golf, often with his brothers and other family members. At home, he could be found in front of the television rooting for Notre Dame and the Dallas Cowboys.

In Addition to the sports, Scott enjoyed traveling, and took trips to such places as Scotland, Alaska, the Carolina mountains, Williamsburg, VA, and Disney World. Recently, he cruised with the family to the Caribbean and Alaska.  A history buff, he was especially interested in the Civil War time period.  He also enjoyed reading.

Among the many gifts Scott possessed, most outstanding  was the way he handled his illness with grace, courage, sense of humor,and concern for others.   

A long time member of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, Scott was also an active member of the Good Samaritan Council of Knights of Columbus for many years, and earned the award of Knight of the Month at one occasion for his work with the organization.

The family will welcome visitors at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church on Wednesday, December 6, from 5PM to 7PM for the viewing. The funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11:30AM on Thursday, December 7th at Christ the Redeemer, followed by burial at Sterling Cemetery. The family requests that there be no flowers. Instead, they ask that donations be made to either the Lower Loudoun Boys’ Football League or the American Cancer Society in the memory of Brian Scott Buckman.
