Carmen and I shared a friendship for 13 years when we both moved from northern VA to Bedford, VA--out in the country--where, actually, we both came from! We lived on back-to-back properties in a beautiful valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We both loved mountains and trees, probably because, coincidentally, we both grew up in the Sunflower State--Kansas--which has few of either!
We were a part of a group of "Neighborhood Ladies", and at that time I was the youngest, and Carmen was the oldest. We just clicked together and bonded in spite of it. We had so much in common. Carmen would say, "Let's go running!", and off we'd go anywhere and everywhere. One time we took a road trip back to our home state to visit family members, but, unlike when we travelled the same miles, always in a hurry with our respective spouses, we took the time to stop and see the sights along the way--the arch in St. Louis, MO; the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY; and even a drive to Santa Claus, IN!
One of my favorite memories is celebrating Carmen's 75th birthday with dinner at the Craddock Terry Hotel in Lynchburg, VA. Thanks to a surprise limousine to and from, compliments of Woody, we all got to experience a bucket list event! I have added two very special photographs of the occasion we shared.
Here are 10 adjectives that easily come to mind, as I grieve the loss of my friend. Carmen was beautiful--inside and out, kind, generous, a good listener, fun-loving, devout in her faith, cheerful, optimistic, well read, and loving. There are so many more. She liked butterflies, the color purple, and desserts. I am very proud to have known her and called her my friend.
After she and Woody moved away to northern VA, she and I still kept in touch through telephone calls that, unfortunately, became less and less frequent. A month before she died, Carmen sent me a text message that said how much she enjoyed reading my Facebook posts, because they kept her in touch with the real world. I was to call her between Christmas and New Year's, but that didn't happen.
I am so thankful to remember that every time we did speak, we ended our conversation saying, "I love you." Some may think that unusual, but for us, "good-bye" just didnt seem right. It still doesn't. I love you, Carmen!

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Carmen, my dearest friend ever. We raised our children together on Perth Court, swapping child care so we could take turns volunteering at Kings Park Elementry School. If we weren’t at her house, we were at mine. We shared life’s joys, and gave each other courage during times of crisis. Carmen’s smile could light up a room. She was the most positive person I have ever known. I know she will be greatly missed. All her dear family are in my prayers. God bless you all. Gwynn

May you be comforted by God’s promise that “he will destroy death forever” (Isaiah 25:8). That the resurrection is real is demonstrated by Jesus at John 11:19-44 where he raised Lazarus to life after 4 days in the grave. This and other resurrection accounts show what Jehovah will do on a far grander scale in the paradise earth to come.
The Bible’s promise of a resurrection does not eliminate the pain of losing a loved one. But picture the reunions as dear friends and relatives, once separated by death, hold one another again. Just the thought of being able to hold your dear one again may make your pain easier to bear. I hope you are moved to learn more about the God who gives us this precious hope at jw.org. My sincere condolences to the family.

Carmen’s obituary says it all. What a special lady! I feel honored to have known her and to have laughed with her every time I saw her. There are no words to tell the family how sorry I am. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Today, I sat back in a chair, closed my eyes and I swear I could hear Carmen laughing. As someone once said: Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.

There are no words to describe a woman as amazing as Carmen. I met her as a teenager and soon became her daughter-in-law. She welcomed me with open arms and an open heart. She taught me so much about life and what matters most. She was the best grandmother to Michael. She had an amazing way of spreading love and calmness and always had the most positive outlook on life. An incredibly strong and resilient woman. She was more of a Mother to me than my own Mom at times. Even though I was no longer part of the family, she never forgot to send me a card on my birthday and every Christmas. She even made sure I got my last card while she was in hospice which shows you what kind of woman she was. My heart has an empty spot bc she is gone but it will be filled with the wonderful memories I have of her and everything she has taught me. Her kids, grandkids, great grandkids and husband are all better people because of her. Love and hugs to the family and prayers to help you through this difficult time.

It's hard to appreciate the greatness of the mountains
When you've lived your entire life atop the Alps.
It's hard to appreciate the greatness of the ocean
When you've lived your entire life along its shores.
It's hard to appreciate the greatness of God
When you've lived your entire life filled with so many blessings.
And it's hard to appreciate the greatness of a mother's love
When you've lived your entire life the child of an Angel.
Mom, Although I may never be fully capable of appreciating you in the purest definition, know this;
I am grateful to know you, thankful to have had time with you, and humbled and honored to be your daughter.
J. Shawn deLadurantaye.
