Obituary of Joyce Thompson Murphy

Joyce Thompson Murphy of Great Falls, VA died on January 27, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Joyce was born February 22, 1948 and was raised in McLean, VA.  She is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 48 years, Jim Murphy, and her two beloved daughters, Kara (Aaron) and Jennifer (Barrett).  She leaves behind her six treasured grandchildren: Noah, Sloane, Chase, Thompson, Colt and Fiona. Joyce was pre-deceased by her parents, Clive and Amelia (Middy) Thompson and was the oldest of six siblings: Carol, Kristi, Clive (Tommy), Jenny, Brian and Jimmy.

Joyce was a survivor of 3 different cancers. She was very active in breast cancer recovery for several years, helping to form and hold meetings for “bosom buddies” at her home and participating in the annual Race for the Cure in Washington, DC. Joyce converted to Catholicism after her earlier cancers and remained devout in her faith.

Joyce enjoyed many summers and weekends at her second home in Fenwick Island, Delaware, read more books than anyone could count and nurtured many lifelong friendships. She loved watching her grandchildren’s ballet, gymnastics, baseball and school events and was always the loudest cheerleader.
