Dearest Sophie and Emily,
My wife and I wish to offer you and your mother our deepest heartfelt sympathy.
I didn’t know your dad all that well. He and I exchanged a nod and a smile as we crossed paths on the square every now and again. My only close encounter with him was more than a decade back, when I gave him a bag of golf balls. Up until last week, I only knew him as “Sophie and Emily’s dad.” And thought of him with respect for that reason. For only a good man could be the father of daughters like you. You can tell a lot about an apple tree from its apples. My brief interactions with you as my wife and I watched you two grow; the way you handled a conversation, your choices of vocabulary and your elegant demeanor, all spoke volume of him and of your mother.
As a man who grew up an orphan, I can say to you with authority that time heals all wounds. And that, more often than not, our wounds make us stronger, and with the right attitude, even better people. Knowing you two, who you are today, I have no doubt you will both grow to be fine ladies, supportive of each other and of your mom. Two fine ladies that would make any father in any heaven smile with pride and joy.

I am so sorry for your loss. I went to grade school, Lake Catholic HS, and played football with Pat at JCU. He was a great friend of mine for a long time. We shared may great times together. We always had fun together. We hadn't seen each other for a long time so when I heard about his health, it hit me hard. I am sure he was a great husband and father. Pat , Thank you for the great memories at John Carroll University. You did things "your way".. not cutting your long red hair flowing outside of your football helmet, telling the coaches you could kick and then sending the football into my back, scratch marks and yellow paint from the Burger King drive through on the side of your mothers car...
