Uncle Al just told me of Mary's passing and I am so terribly sorry. Meeting her was one of the bright spots of Dad's memorial service. She taught me the sign for "weird" and I've used it since, thinking of us laughing together at the time. Please know that you all will be in prayers. I wish you all strength and peace.

To Mary Jack's mother, father, and Martha-
You have my condolences. I just heard from an old Cherry Tree colleague about Mary Jack's passing. As teachers we are not supposed to have favorite students, but we do. Mary Jack was one of my favorites. I'm afraid I learned more from her than she learned from me, but I became a better teacher as a result of working with her. I still remember her love of the John Mayer song "Waiting on the World to Change."
Warmest regards,
Ross Miller, Mary Jack's 5th grade teacher

I'll never forget the first time I met MJ. I was 7 years old, and MJ and Martha had just moved in down the street. Since then, MJ has been a part of my most cherished childhood memories. MJ made the world a better place, and I'm so happy that God brought her into my life. Miss you Mary Jack.

Remembering Mary
When I met Mary Jack she was in early elementary. A beautiful little girl with a grin that literally went from ear to ear. She impressed me as a curious, spontaneous child possessing a pinch of mischief.
My daughter and Mary met in first grade and started, what would become, a long-time friendship. Mary and Jennifer enjoyed watching movies, doing gymnastics, and dressing up as characters like superheroes. As a teen Mary moved away but she still would come to visit when possible.
Growing up Mary developed a head-strong will. When she latched on to something she put her whole heart and soul into it. But I believe this was because she was a very creative person. She was delighted with visual arts: drawing, taking pictures, Deaf theater, animated movies. And she liked making a fashion statement.
I remember some of Mary's other loves; friends, family, animals, anime, thrill rides, sugar and shopping at Hot Topics.
My family will miss our friend Mary Jack and her fun-loving spirit.
My heart is broken.
So sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss. Mary was such a sweet student. I gave her medications from Student Health. I would Text her cellphone to remind her to come. I also know some sign language and she would talk with me. I especially remember her excitement when she turned 21 and celebrated with her friends. God has another angel.

Mary Jack-
Where do I start? I first met you when I was doing my teaching internship at Mantua Elementary School in Fairfax, VA. I worked with you during parent ASL classes. Fast forward two years later, I moved to Indiana. Little will I know, you would be in my first class at Indiana School for the Deaf! I was a long term sub for another teacher on maternity leave. I started the new school year with you & worked with you for a semester. I found some old pictures from Mantua and showed to you, and we connected. We had this special connection. When I ended my duties that December, you cried because I was your favorite teacher, and you did not want me to move to another class. I cried too because I loved teaching you and your friends. Because I seemed to understand you and your learning style, your parents asked me if I could private tutor you twice a week. There, we continued our friendship. I gave birth to my son, Coffey, and he was a few months old at that time, and every Tuesday/Thursday, we had a routine where we would get in my Jeep, and stop by BP Gas station for our Icees and sour candy for you. Then you loved going in Kindercare and often insisted in carrying Coffey to the Jeep. When we arrived at your home, you would spread your homework/books all over your huge dining table. Your amazing mom, Nigelle, and big sister, Martha would take care of Coffey. Our routine did not start until we played with your Pugs (George & Martha). We would work hard at math (fun fun fun- not), and some reading/writing. Sometimes your mom would make us dinner, and I would stay later. Coffey was well taken care of at your home by your family. When your dad arrived home from work, I would also chat chat while you watched on the tv in the kitchen. On Thursdays, Coffey & I would stay later so we could watch Survivors and CSI together. We loved Rupert! I still remember the amazing smile on MJ's face when we actually passed Rupert in his Sorrento in Indianapolis. As a fun writing exercise, we decided to write to Rupert. Imagine the face on MJ’s face when Rupert wrote back! That was a moment to remember. Sometimes I would babysit you on the weekends so your parents could have some time to themselves. You loved doting on Coffey. My family grew bigger with baby Mattea, and I could not commit to working with you as much. However, we tried to get in some time together. I remember taking you to fun Target Thursdays at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum. Those were fun times. I was sad when we moved New Mexico. You gave Mattea & Coffey some of your favorite toys so we would remember you. We continued to keep in touch as you grew up. I would check in with you, as well as your family. Social media came, and we kept up with each other as much as we could. You were so happy when I came to DC to visit during Homecoming. You were an amazing helper at our #whyisign booth. We talked so much about our memories. I saw you a few times in DC. Even though I was your teacher, you taught me more than you would ever know. You were the one and only MJ. There was no one like you.Thank you for remembering me on my birthday last week. I know I still owe you dinner at my casa. You know you are always welcome here in my house, Mary Jack. I will have myself some Icee and some sour candies in your honor. I will see you again. I love you, Mary Jack.

I vividly remember Mary Jack and her mom from her days in the Parent Infant Program at KDES. She was spunky, curious and full of energy. I hang a beautiful handmade cookie ornament on my Christmas tree ever since I had the pleasure of working with Mary Jack and her family. My heart breaks for her going too soon. May she rest in eternal peace. All of her family and friends are in my prayers. She will be remembered.
