Obituary of Tim Shermer

I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.

On Thursday June 14, 2018, Timothy T Shermer was called home to God at the age of 50, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert, and 4 children lost to miscarriage. Tim is survived by his loving wife Andrea, their five children, Rebecca, Nicholas, Gabriel, Genevieve, and Zachary, his mother Myrna and his brother, John.

Family and Friends are all asked to gather at Saint Veronica Catholic Church, 3460 Centreville Road, Chantilly, VA 20151, Tuesday June 19, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 pm to celebrate Tim’s life. Mass of Christian Burial will also be held at St. Veronica’s on Wednesday June 20, 2018 at 10:00 am. Burial immediately follows at St. John the Apostle Cemetery, 101 Oakcrest Manor Drive NE, Leesburg, VA 20176.

Tim was born on February 9, 1968 to Robert Richard Shermer and Myrna Mae Wineburg in Alexandria, VA. The younger of two children, he grew up in Rockville, Maryland. Tim was an active member of Boy Scout Troop 422 at Saint Mary’s Church. After graduation from Rockville High School in 1986, he joined the US Army. After completing his service to his country, Tim’s life changed dramatically as he began his service to God and to his family. Tim and Andrea married in the fall of 1992. He became a child of God, receiving four sacraments, on April 10, 1993; immediately following the Mass, his father-in-law presented him a form 100, thus beginning his service in the Knights of Columbus. It wasn’t long before he became a Fourth Degree Knight. His first dirt project, the Memorial for the Unborn at St. Catherine of Siena in Great Falls, VA, inspired him to do more for the church. God heard him loud and clear, as he went on to do projects with Fr. Vander Woude, then spent 11 years going to WorkCamp for the diocese, his nickname being, “Tim the Tool Man.” He helped teens build countless decks, ramps, and so much more. Tim was introduced to the Civil Air Patrol. He loved watching his children grow in leadership, service and aerospace education. As he was able, he taught and learned right along with them.

For eleven years, Tim bravely battled several neurological diseases, valiantly refusing to allow it to defeat his vocation. Although Tim had many mountains to climb (eventually with only one foot), he steadfastly remained faithful to God, family, and friends. While we cannot fully understand why he was called so young, we may be comforted with the knowledge that his work continues.

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching.

For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths. But you, be self-possessed in all circumstances; put up with hardship; perform the work of an evangelist; fulfill your ministry.

For I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance.

                                    2 Timothy 4: 1-8

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the College Fund* for his children.

The Shermer family would like to extend our gratitude to the many priests, the staff of Fairfax Hospital and Alder Center for Caring for their gentle and compassionate care of Tim and his family.

Pray, hope, and don’t worry.

                                                                                                -Padre Pio
