Obituary of Avis F. Runion
Avis Lorraine Basye Funkhouser Runion, 96, of Herndon/Sterling, VA, passed away on July 19, 2018 at her daughter’s home in Ashburn, VA.
Born on August 21, 1921 in Mathias, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Lorenzo Boyd Basye and Daisy See Keller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Owen Runion, two sons, Paul Runion and Jerry Funkhouser, and one step-son, Elmer Runion. Also preceding her in death were her step father Russell Keller, brothers Garland Keller, Orville See, Lorenzo Basye Jr. and sisters Ruby Minnick and Camcy Basye.
She is survived by her son, Wayne (Dawn) Runion of Sterling, VA, daughters Debbie (Chris) O’Keefe of Ashburn, VA and Peggy (Norman) Azouqha of Haymarket, VA., two daughters-in-law, Myra Funkhouser Keiffer of Woodbridge, VA and Betty Runion of Harrisonburg, VA, 16 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters, Vada Miller of Harrisonburg, VA, Leona Judy of Richmond, VA, Margaret Sherman of Baker, WV and Effie Eaton of Paw Paw, WV, and her caregiver, Precious, who was lovingly by her side for the last 10 months of her life and was a tremendous comfort and help to her and the family.
Along with being a 2014 Senior Olympics Gold Medal winner, Avis was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend to anyone she met. She was a hardworking, owning various restaurants, hair salons, and took care of children and elderly in her home. She was an avid gardener and a supporter of the Virginia Nazarene Camp & Retreat Center and Oakton Baptist Church of Chantilly.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Fri July 20, 2018 at Adams Green Funeral Home, Herndon VA.
A funeral service will be held at 11am on Saturday July 21, 2018 at Oakton Baptist Church of Chantilly, VA, with Rev. Ray Brock officiating. A Graveside service and burial will be held at 11am on Tuesday July 24, 2018 at Mountain Grove Church of the Brethren, Fulks Run, VA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oakton Baptist Church of Chantilly or Virginia Nazarene Camp & Retreat Center.
