Obituary of Thomas Francis Hurney Jr.

THOMAS F. HURNEY, Jr.

     Thomas (Tom) Hurney of Reston, Va. died on August 21, 2018, surrounded by his family after a brief illness and complications from a stroke. He was born on December 8, 1929, in Boston, Ma., son of Thomas F. Hurney and Helen E. Hurney (Lemieux)

 He spent most of his childhood in West Hartford, Connecticut, graduating from William H. Hall High school, and received his B.A. degree from The University of Connecticut. He served in the U.S. Navy (active duty) in the Korean War, honorably discharged in 1953.

     He entered Federal Service (the FBI) in 1954, and continued as a federal investigator in various agencies, (most notably the DEA) as Deputy Administrator, Miami Florida, 1969-1973.  He received additional training at GW University War College, Washington, D.C. 1973-75, and is a Charter member of AFFNA (Association of Former Federal Narcotics Agents) and was founding Chairman of AFFNA, Washington, D.C. Chapter.  He served as an FBI Special Agent in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., including a two-year undercover assignment into Iron Curtain Intelligence, and as a criminal fraud investigator for the U.S. insurance industry and the Federal Maritime Commission.

      He volunteered in many local organizations, notably The Citizens Advisory Committee to The Fairfax County Police Department, Reston District, for close to 20 years.

     He leaves behind Margaret, his beloved wife of 55 years, his sons Thomas and James, and their wives Jene’ of Brackettville, TX. and Kimberly, of Port Orange, Fla. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Elizabeth Hurney, nephew William Hurney, and niece Stephanie Hurney of Middletown, R.I. along with niece Margaret Stafstrom of Cromwell, Ct. and nephew Jeffrey P. Morrissey of Torrington, CT.

    Visitation will be held at Adams-Green Funeral Home, Herndon, Va. on Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, from 2pm-5pm.  Funeral Mass and burial will be in West Hartford Ct.

  Tom loved God and Country, his family, and all of you.  We are grateful that he is at peace for all eternity and know that heaven will be kind.

   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice.
