Obituary of Thomas Walter Poeschl Jr.

Thomas Walter Poeschl Jr. Age 58 of Herndon, Virginia

Tom was born in 1959 in St Paul, Minnesota to Thomas and Nancy Poeschl. He was the “good” child who didn’t make his parents worry and was the knot tying champion of his den in Boy Scouts. He attended St. Agnes Catholic School near his home in St Paul from K-12, where he studied Latin. He attended St Thomas College (now the University of St Thomas) where he graduated, with honors in 1981 with a BA in Accounting.  He was then employed by Honeywell corporation in Minneapolis.  He went back to school in 1986 to pursue his MBA in Management Information Systems and again graduated with honors in 1987.  While working on his MBA he met his future wife Grace Meininger through his roommates’ girlfriend and was immediately taken with her, they were engaged just 4 months after meeting and married a year later.  They have been married for 30 years and began their married life in Eagan MN.

Tom and Grace traveled to Seoul Korea in 1998 where they brought home daughter Hanna Young Poeschl who was 14 months old at the time.  The moved to Herndon VA in 2003 where Tom began work as a government contractor in the tech field specializing in Oracle Database development. Tom, Grace, and Hanna traveled to China in 2005 to bring home their second daughter Lan Anna Poeschl who was 6 years old at the time.

Tom was a loving son, brother, husband & father. He will be remembered most for his love of family and quiet sense of humor. His gentleness, empathy, and humility will be missed. Tom was an avid sports fan, sci-fi enthusiast and, in the words of daughter Lan, was "Marvel comic worthy". He worked in agencies including the Transportation Security Administration and Defense Intelligence Agency for U.S. government. Tom’s co-workers and superiors thought very highly of him and appreciated his excellent work ethic. Preceded in death by his dear mother Nancy, and survived by his loving family: wife Grace Meininger, daughters Hanna & Lan (all of Virginia), father Thomas Sr. of Cottage Grove, brother John (Andrea) Poeschl of Plymouth, sister Lisa (Bob) Welter of St. Paul Park, and eight nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life is planned for Thursday, September 13th at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax 2709 Hunter Mill Rd Oakton VA 22124 at 10 AM with a light potluck lunch following.
