Obituary of Sybil M. Witsell

Sybil M. Witsell, age 96, of Herndon, VA, passed away on September 13, 2018 at INOVA Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Leesburg, VA.

Sybil M. Witsell was born in Brooklyn, NY to Samuel C. and Robertine Maynard on August 28, 1922. She went to Girl’s High School in Brooklyn graduating at age 16 in 1938. She went on to earn her Registered Professional Nursing Certification in 1945 from Central Islip State Hospital School of Nursing and achieved the Gold Medal as Class Valedictorian. She spent the next 30 years in Public Health Nursing working for various New York State agencies.

Sybil returned to college in 1971 and received her Master of Arts in Health Sciences from Adelphi University.  She then taught Nursing and Health Sciences for various institutions in New York serving the combined professions of nursing and education until retiring in 1986.

Sybil was a kind, loving person who conveyed both physical and spiritual warmth to everyone she met whether stranger or friend. She loved to entertain and made all visitors feel at home.

Sybil is survived by her brothers Edward Maynard and wife, Tina and Sydney Maynard and wife, Pearline; children Marie and Stephen Francis and daughter-in-law, Beverley; grandsons, Marcus Rock, Adrian Francis, Ian Francis and wife Sarah; great-granddaughter, Safia Rock and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She is preceded in death by husband(s) Robert Francis and George Witsell, parents Samuel C. and Robertine Maynard, and siblings, Marjorie Williams, Eleanor Elliott and Robert C. Maynard.

Visitation will be held at ADAMS-GREEN Funeral Home on Saturday, September 29th at 11:00a followed by the Funeral Service at 12:00p with Pastor Sean Roberds of First Baptist Church of Herndon officiating. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Jacksonville, FL.
