I was so sorry to hear of Bruce's passing, and also that I was out of town and couldn't attend the memorial gathering. I have wonderful memories from my later years at USGS of Bruce dropping by my office to share stories of the theater. One of my favorites was the one about Cary Grant, already a major star, being offered the role of Professor Henry Higgins in the movie My Fair Lady, after Rex Harrison had played the part on Broadway. Grant insisted the studio offer it to Harrison. What a class act! And what a treasure trove of stories Bruce shared with me over the years! My deepest condolences to Cookie and the family.

An early memory -
In 1974, the U.S. Geological Survey had moved recently from downtown Washington to the then rural suburbs of Reston, VA. The Branch of Experimental Geochemistry and Mineralogy had an active experimental group; Steve Huebner ran a high temperature laboratory studying element partitioning between crystals and melt among other projects. In 1974, Bruce Lipin and Steve Luddington joined the EG&M Branch as post-docs to collaborate with Steve on work he was doing related to the origin of the Lunar basalts. Bruce had much experience on the chemistry and petrology of oxides through his Ph.D. work at Penn State with Arnulf Muan. The USGS work involved a high temperature furnace; Bruce and Steve had one each that they labelled “Sundance” and “Butch Cassidy”. After this stint with the EG&M Branch, Bruce joined the Branch of Eastern Mineral Resources where he spent the rest of his USGS career. But once a member of EG&M, always a member. In October 2013, if I remember correctly, Bruce held a very nice EG&M reunion at the Midtown in Reston.

Although I only knew Bruce for a short time, the following is my most poignant memory:
As a member of the Midtown Social Committee, Bruce conducted a monthly movie night. He stood to introduce each film and recounted the most interesting facts viewers might want to know about each film and/or its actors. I love film, so as a new Midtown owner, I attended these monthly viewings with great anticipation.
Bruce's final movie night, September 25, 2018, happened to be the Hoosiers. I arrived to find an empty theater except for Bruce. "Where is everyone?" I asked. Bruce explained that Cookie, Linda and Dave Garbin (the other regulars) were out to dinner at Nostos Tysons. "I'm sorry Bruce," I responded. "You are missing dinner at Nostos to give me a private showing!" "It's okay," Bruce replied. He went on to introduce me to the significance of High School Basketball in Indiana; that Hoosiers was loosely based on a true story; that Barbara Hershey was one of his favorite actresses and that Dennis Hopper won an Oscar nomination for his film role.
God bless you Bruce. Hoosiers will always hold a special place in my heart.

Cookie,
It has been a very long time since we have been in contact. I am so sorry for your loss. I have very fond memories of when you and Bruce lived across the street from Charlotte and me over 30 years ago. I believe it was you and Bruce who suggested that we take the kids trick or treating with go cups and the adults would trick or treat for booze.
My wife, Kathy, and I moved to Sonoma, CA 2 1/2 years ago and are not able to make it back for Bruce's Celebration of Life.
Our hearts go out to you and your family.
All the best,
Robert Mandel
