Obituary of Bettie Williams Thacker
Bettie Williams Thacker, 80, of Herndon, VA passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2019.
Born on July 20, 1938 on Hollywood Farm on Centreville Road in Herndon, VA. She was the daughter of the late Claude and Reva (Alcock) Williams Sr. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Bobby J. Thacker, son David Gantt (Linda) and daughter, Joy Gantt (Stanley Groft 2d), three grandchildren, John Best (Jill), Jessica and Stanley Groft 3d. Two brothers, Claude Williams Jr (Elizabeth) and Richard Williams (Deanna), many nieces and nephews.
Throughout her life she was involved in many activities in Herndon. Bettie was a Girl Scout in the 1940s. While attending school she played basketball and softball. Bettie played clarinet in the marching band. She graduated Herndon High School in 1956.
After high school, Bettie began working for the federal government and retired after 38 years of service. She also remained active in retirement organizations raising funds for scholarships.
Bettie joined Herndon United Methodist Church in 1950 where over the years she taught Sunday school, directed the children's choir, and sang in adult choir for over 40 years.
In the 1950s -1970s, Bettie served in the Ladies Auxiliary to the Herndon Volunteer Fire Department and served offices on the local PTAs. She was a member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc. Bettie was a Past President of the local Herndon Chapter which raised funds for women to continue their education and build careers to support their families. She was named Herndon's Woman of the Year for 1982.
Bettie was a member of the Fairfax Genealogical Society, the Loudoun Genealogical Club, and the Herndon Historical Society. She was a member of the Herndon Seniors and served as their President for a number of years into the 2000s.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Monday, January 21, 2019 at Adams Green Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Research, 2512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871 or to donate online, brightfocus.org/ADRdonate.
