Obituary: Richard Wayne Gilbert Jan. 29, 1943 - Feb. 4, 2009 Richard Wayne Gilbert passed away at his home in Sterling, Virginia on February 4, 2009, after an extended illness. He was 66.
A native of Danville, Virginia, he was born Jan. 29, 1943, to Herman Hugh Gilbert and Helen Marie Gibson Gilbert. His childhood was spent in Danville, Virginia, various military bases in the Washington DC area, and in Germany and Okinawa, where his father served in the U.S. Army.
He was a graduate of Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland, and the Danville Technical Institute in Danville, Virginia, where he received a diploma in printing. He served the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, Virginia as a printshop foreman, and retired after 33 years of federal service.
Since his retirement, he has served as League Commissioner for the Suburban Friendship League, which provides scheduling services to local soccer teams. Previously, he also coached youth soccer in Sterling and Herndon, Virginia.
He is survived by four daughters: Marsha Stephens of Ashland, Virginia; Melissa Cabrales of Arlington, Virginia; Marla Hundley of Roanoke, Virginia; and Marian Gilbert of Dublin, Virginia, and four grandchildren, Alexis and Gabriella Cabrales, Kyle Stephens, and Aiden Hundley. He is also survived by two brothers, Dennis Gilbert of Reedville, Virginia, and Greg Gilbert of Murrieta, California, and four sisters, Sandra Laird of Mesa, Arizona; Joyce Gilbert of Chantilly, Virginia; Joanne Griffin of Providence, North Carolina; and Carol Pyrtle of Watkinsville, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Helen Gilbert, and his brother, Donald Gilbert.
A memorial service will be held at Adams-Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden Street in Herndon, Virginia on February 14, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation starting at 10:30 a.m. A Celebration of Life reception will follow the service.
